The Marysville Meteors are off to a boundless start. Union County's home-based professional basketball team has played four games and is undefeated.
Many of the team's opponents are new to league play.
The crowd loves the action and the players love the interaction between the fans in the stands that is caused by the action on the court.
The first four games have exceeded well over 100 points each.
Mixing the big-time speed of the game with the small-town environment has created a favorable court for entertainment and enjoyment.
The Meteors love being in Marysville. "We're starting to get some pretty good excitement going among the crowd," said Charlie Mitchell, owner of the IBL Meteors.
Marysville resident Kenny Chaffin, who wears number 23 on the Meteors, dazzled the audience during the home opener on March 8.
Grand Rapids Flight player Sun Ming Ming, who is 7'9" will face the Meteors on Sun., March 25 at Marysville High School.
So far, the team has faced opponents who have no record of previous games and do not have on-court tapes to be watched that shows their performance. The Meteors have little to go against in judging their opponents.
" People have seen our team from our tapes and we are at somewhat of a disadvantage because we have no idea who they are because they have no tapes," said Mitchell.
The games are fast-paced and don't give players time to rest. The crowd interacts and gets into the game. The energy on the floor goes around the gym. It is more than a winning atmosphere for the players and the fans.
The Meteors reach out to the young. Students and kids can join the Meteor Zone to cheer on the Marysville Meteors, the first professional team in Union County's history. In the Meteor Zone, "Meteor Maniac" members receive a team t-shirt, reduced tickets and special hot dog prices for all home games. Members also are able to take advantage of special promotions during the year.
" I would love for every kid in Marysville to grow up working on his game in hopes of one day becoming a Marysville Meteor," said Chaffin, who is also the Varsity Boys Basketball Coach at Marysville High School.
The Meteors next home game is Sun., March 25, 2 p.m. at Marysville High School against Grand Rapids.
Meteors Head Coach Shawn Smith is a 2004 Buckeye Letterman who played under Coach Jim O'Brien.
